Breaking Free of Ego – The Voice Inside Your Head

What is that voice inside our heads? Is it our consciousness? How about our thoughts? Maybe it is responsible to play the devils advocate game with us? The human psyche can be a very peculiar thing. As humans have gained the ability to think and act independently over time, we have developed a self-identifying mechanism known as the ego. The ego has benefits, but also can be very crippling. Breaking free of Ego – the voice inside your head, can be a tall order. However, once able to see it for what it is, our world of limitations turn into super highways of open potential and possibility.

What is the Ego?

Our egos help define our character. It generates our personality. Without some ego, we would all be rather robotic in nature.

Most people when they hear the word ego envision the pompous, outspoken, overly-confident, rich person that can’t help throwing around their opinion. While this is part of the definition, it goes well beyond that often misunderstood interpretation.

The ego also impacts the quiet, bashful, recluse kind of individuals as well. It comprises our fears, insecurities, limiting beliefs, and self-doubts.

Everyone is impacted differently through their ego. As we grow up, we begin to believe certain stories about ourselves. These stories can come from our parents, friends, social culture, and surrounding environments. The ego begins to develop a sense “of self” through our life experiences. Before too long and often at a young age, we begin to form our personalities alongside the development of our egos.

For many, we begin to unknowingly identify with our ego. A type of entrapment often happens and we wake up at some point in our lives believing whatever it is that the voice inside our head tells us.

How the Ego uses Guilt to Hold us Back

A Course in Miracles” has become one of my greatest learning assets on what ego is and how breaking free of ego is so important in our lives. The Course teaches about our separation and splintering off from our higher power. Like our soul and spirt connects to this higher power, so does the ego connect with the physical world in which we live. ACIM, as it is known, teaches about our separation from our higher power and the guilt that the ego identifies with it.

To think and align with guilt is to fear punishment. The ego believes in and aligns with division since we splintered off from our Source. What we accept into our own minds begins to generate our realities. When thinking in a guilty manner, it automatically generates a feeling of fear. As many have come to understand – fear is one of the most crippling of all emotions we experience in life.

Choosing to live our lives through our empowered spirit and connection to our higher selves is how we overcome this feeling of guilt. When we choose to see in alignment with the ego, we are identifying with the physical realm and aligning with separation. In reality, we are always connected to our Source. Through using our spirit to allow our higher selves to live with us while in the physical world, we are choosing not to see ourselves as separate.

Many of us have become disillusioned in the belief that we are separate from our Source and that fuels the ego. Thus unconsciously, our guilt rises and begins to side more with the physical reality we see in front of us, rather than the empowering life-force we are still connected with.

We are not Our Thoughts, Mind, or Ego

I believe part of our journey in life is to discover who and what we really are.

While our ego is attached to this physical life we are living, we must discover that we are not our hierarchy, wealth, physical looks, among many other things.

Eckhart Tolle and his incredibly enlightening book “The Power of Now,” dictates the point of identification quite well. He explains the following:

Identification with your mind creates an opaque screen of concepts, labels, images, words, judgements, and definitions that blocks all true relationship.

It is through this “screen of thought” he describes that creates the “illusion” of separateness. We begin to believe that there is a “You” and a totally separate “other being.” Through this illusion we then can no longer see that we are really “one with all that is.”

Freeing Yourself from the Ego & Mind

We all hear the voice inside our head – that doesn’t make us crazy. That voice or ego we have is always commenting on what comes up in our minds. It makes judgements, comparisons, complaints, likes, and dislikes. This is not something that will likely change. However, we can gain some level of “impartialness” to that thought. Here are some ways that we can begin breaking free of ego and mindless chatter:

  • Pay attention to repetitive patterns of thought
  • Do not judge or condemn the thoughts you have
  • Listen to the thought impartially
  • Begin to “watch” and “listen” to the voice – become the observer of it
  • Do not think along with it – simply observe it without judgment

Playing the “watcher” of your ego and mind helps bring you more towards consciousness and becoming ever more present. This is how we begin to disengage from the mindless chatter. Therefore the involuntary mind chatter begins to lessen.

As Eckhart Tolle teaches, “Instead of watching the thinker, you can also create a gap in the mind stream by directing the focus of your attention into “The Now.” Each time we create a gap in the mindless wonderment of our thought stream, our consciousness grows ever more aware and powerful.

If the ego were to have its way, it would forever keep us living in the past and future. Stuck in our blunders and mistakes and forever fearful of how those errors will craft our misfortune of our futures.

Our liberation away from the mindless chatter and fear generation of the ego, is generated as we focus evermore intently into present moment awareness. “Thought cannot exist without consciousness, but consciousness does not need thought.”

We can begin to see that we are no longer “the emotions” of our lives, rather we are the watcher or observing presence.

It takes some practice, but with enough effort we can learn to see ourselves as never separate from our higher Source. We can “watch” our egoic mind and bring ourselves ever more into present moment awareness and happiness.

Outcomes of Cause and Effect and its Principles in Life

If you could look back at your life and see the possible outcomes of all the decisions you didn’t make, would you do it? Perhaps the tiny choices you made might have added up to make big differences in your current situation. Life outcomes of cause and effect often go unnoticed. We stroll through the minutia of our days giving little pause to the mundane. Perhaps we do make space for the bigger decisions. But what would happen if we could keep score for all the outcomes of cause and effect in life?

Cause & Effect is my favorite principle of the Hermetic Kybalion teachings. It’s the one that I am constantly striving to understand its impact in life. In order to create change, we must begin with us. Too often people do one of two things:

  • They get angry with the world and decide to become belligerent and outrageous yelling, protesting, becoming angry with what they see around them.
  • They become a recluse and retreat to “fake realities,” putting blinders up and pretending the outside world isn’t there

But then this is a precious few type of people. They are the ones that understand on an basic and collective level that real change occurs from our individual and collective thought. In order to bring about change in our lives, we have to create it ourselves. Being upset, clambering about the world’s problems, and becoming negative does nothing but breed more of those actions. Standing by pretending problems don’t exist is not a wise decision either.

Before Action, we have Thought

We individually and collectively bring into our physical world what we think. This is cause and effect. This principle means that nothing ever happens by chance. There is a reason for everything. Every decision we make has an outcome that is produced. This principle is in harmony with the principle of Correspondence.

There are higher planes of existence that dominate the lower planes and all throughout these planes of existence nothing escapes the Principle of Cause & Effect. Everything comes with explanation if we look upon it with known understanding. The way to use this principle with more empowerment is to consciously become aware of how it works. Step back, become aware, and “watch” your thoughts in action.

Becoming Mindful

The trick is to realize that the mental plane (plane of thought) is where we spend a great deal of time. Become “mindful” of thought. Tune into our own cause and stop simply allowing effect to happen “unknowingly.”

This means become the catalyst for life. Through our thoughts, we are literally thinking our lives into existence, one moment at a time. If we think in an anxious and fearful manner – we will bring more of those emotions into our lives. Think in a calm and peaceful demeanor you will have more abundance of those types of reactions in life. We can put into action the first move, which will bring us the result we desire, not as a surprise, but a product of calculation. You see how this parlays back to the principle of correspondence? We often say we want to live better lives and become better leaders and individuals. What steps does that entail? Perhaps we chose to focus on writing each day and reading more often. As opposed, to not doing those things, and finding the excuses to sit around and watch more TV and news.

When one is on the quest to become a person who has mastery over their “Self” they begin to gain control their feelings, personality, and environment. That individual will naturally have to obey the causation of higher planes in accordance to this principle. When one becomes more aware of this, it is impossible to act out of compliance to higher principles.

Developing more Awareness to take Control

Having awareness of this will give you the ability to take control on the physical plane of existence that we all live in, without walking through life in utter disarray and lack of control.

I sincerely hope anyone reading this will understand that we are individually and collectively creating our own worlds. We can choose to ignore what we see hoping that someone else will come along and change it. We can get upset, scream, and yell at the people we don’t like seeing them do what they do, or we can all look within and become better at controlling our mental thoughts.

This way we manifest what we want here in the physical. The outcomes of cause and effect become more apparent. We don’t NEED ANYONE to tell us how to live. Suddenly, the power and ability within ourselves is revealed for us to attain our greatest potentials in life.

Journaling is a great way to see this live in action. Take a few notes a day on your mood and feelings. Then take note of what happens around you. What effects are generated from the “cause” your mood or mental state?

The Principle of Vibration and its effect in Life

Everything in life is vibrating. Life is made up of energy. The chair I sit on as I type this post is not actually solid. It is made up of billions and billions of tiny little atoms swirling around at such a fast pace that the chair appears solid and even holds me in place. But, the chair is not actually “solid matter.” The Principle of vibration and its effect in life is something that we need to understand in order to see the bigger picture.

In my previous blog post, we discussed the principle of correspondence, the second of the 7 principles of the Kybalion. The third principle of Vibration builds upon this learning. Feel free to go back and read it as well as the first principle of mentalism.

Atoms are Actually Empty Space

Science and physics have come a long way over the centuries and in the modern era we have come to understand energy is at the center of everything. It has been proven true that atoms are actually made up of empty space.

Here’s some mind-bending statistics – an atom’s nucleus is only a few femtometers across. A femtometer is actually a word, I didn’t just make it up, though it sounds like it. A femtometer is about a thousand million millionth of a meter. Super incredibly small.

So now we need to understand exactly how far away the electrons are from the nucleus of the atom. They actually travel around the nucleus at a distance of one-ten-billionth of a meter away from the core. To “right size” this – it’s 100,000 times the width of the nucleus. A comparison to this would be if the nucleus were a basketball centered in Manhattan, then the electrons flying around it would be circling from about the distance to Philadelphia. All the space in between the rotation — is empty space.

The chair you are sitting in is made of empty space. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s proven truth now by science. The electrons and the nuclei are constantly engaging through the force known as electromagnetism. Each circumference around the atom is carried about the rotation through an electronic force of a particle of pure energy called a photon. Each photon pushes back with equal force, a tiny push or pull enabled across the emptiness in space. And that, along with some other quantum physics jargon, is really what’s keeping my ass from drifting through “the stuff” I call my chair. It is really all the “energy force” of this process that holds the chair together.

The Human Body is Vibrating

Enough with the science lesson. Energy makes up the physical world. This energy is in constant vibration and movement. The human body “vibrates.” The body can generate mechanical vibrations at very low frequencies, so-called infrasonic waves.

Different organs of the human body produce different resonance frequencies. For example, the heart resonance frequency vibrates at 1 hertz. The brain has a resonance frequency of 10 hertz. Everything we see in life is vibrating at a set pace; some really fast and some really slow. To really understand this try and think of a tire on a car or truck moving VERY fast. It almost can appear that it’s not moving at all right? And at the lowest levels of vibration, objects move extremely slow. They appear to be not moving at all -think rocks and trees.

Between these two states of super fast and very slow, there exist infinite manifestations all occurring at varying octaves of vibration, each with their own existence and reactionary states.

Be More Mindful

I believe that human thought has its own level of vibration. We can tune it like an instrument to produce different results. With better understanding of the principle of vibration, we can aim to generate self-improvement in this physical form. We even can learn to manifest thoughts into existence in our own lives. We just need to be mindful of what thoughts we want to manifest. That depends on becoming more mindful and aware of our mental and emotional state.

As we can better understand vibration and our own frequency; harmony and resonance increases, and thus our power over ourselves and our world. This is the way that we ultimately can control and better ourselves, along with the entire world – one…person…at…a…time.

Improve Our Lives Using the Principle of Correspondence

The Hermetic Principle of Correspondence is another way to say:

  • “As above; so below
  • “As below; so above”
  • “As within; so without”
  • “As without; so within”

Once understood, we can improve our lives using the principle of correspondence. We begin to see a correspondence between the various planes of existence that the universe operates within.

In a previous post: the first Hermetic Principle of Mentalism, we outlined how the universe is a thought generated plane. After we think, we manifest our thoughts from the mental plane to the physical plane. Depending on how strong the thought, determines the time to manifest in the physical reality.

Realizing this is what can allow an individual to examine solutions to problems that exist “above,” and “below” surface level. What is meant by this is having the ability to analyze where a problem’s real point of manifestation is. For example, if an individual is dealing with a dilemma concerning self-confidence, the problem can be analyzed from points in the mental and physical. There are many different aspects to this particular issue. Let’s attempt to look at a few possible angles in which how the principle of correspondence applies.

Self-Confidence

A person with a “confidence issue,” may be dwelling on some situations in their past that have been brought into the present. The problem actually may have originated with one example, or even multiple examples from the past. Because we only truly live and operate within the “present moment,” the constant dwelling on the lack of self-confidence continues to materialize within the everyday present moment.

Time is an Illusion

Because “time” doesn’t actually really exist, this constant dwelling of lack of confidence is being brought in from the realm of thought. The thought plane is separate from the physical plane. Manifesting in the physical plane always occurs within the present moment. Although it may be in small increments, manifesting always happens in the present. The mental place or “realm,” of thought is not bound by “time.” Thought happens always presently, even if subtle and small. We are always thinking in the present moment, even if we are dwelling on our past. Thinking now, even if about the past, is occurring in the present moment.

Time is a man-made construct as we only truly ever live in “the now.” The past was at one time lived presently in a particular moment. The future will be lived in present moments as well. Time was created by man in order to function within the society we’ve come to know. When we really understand time for what it is, it can be easier to see that it truly doesn’t exist.

We never operate “physically,” in the past or future. Past and future thoughts are what we bring into our current and present state. The solution to this problem is simply to change the mindset and stop focusing on the moments in the past, or worry of the future. This is just one example of how to understand and use the principle of correspondence.

Solving our Daily Problems

Many of our current problems are simply aspects of our daily thoughts. I know it sounds easier to say than to do, but we literally can improve our lives for the better by being able to properly analyze our mental thought activities. By making it a practice to observe our own thoughts, we gain the ability to become mindful. Becoming mindful then puts us more in touch with the present moment, which then shapes our future one day at a time…hopefully for the better.

This is how we get life to “correspond,” with us and for us. It is where we aim to improve our lives. As the French philosopher Rene Descartes famously first said, “I think, therefore I am”…This principle is absolute. It works for the positive and the negative. Think positive – you’ll bring in more positive aspects, think negative and you’ll certainly attract more negativity into your life.
