We have all felt emotional highs and lows of days, weeks, and months that pass us by. We love staying in the highs of life and always want to get out of the lows as quickly as possible. The phrase, “This too shall pass,” was created to be always observed as a truth and is appropriate in all times and situations. What we need to understand is how to align with the rhythm of life so we can flow more good days over bad.
All We Have is Right Now

It cannot be overstated that all we ever experience takes place through the ever present moment of our lives. Be that moment positive or negative, the only constant is that it will not last. It will float by on the rhythm and waves of life. This too shall pass.
Abraham Lincoln employed these words into his speech at his inauguration as he become the 16th president of the United States. The words ring ever true and full of affirmation for all of us.
It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: “And this, too, shall pass away.” How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!

The Universal Cycle of Life
Existing within the poles of Polarity, is the pendulum swing of the Rhythm of life. This 5th principle of the Kybalion embodies the fact that everything in life exists in measured motion. Here to there, in and out, backward and forward. Through the rise and fall, everything is always moving and flowing and never truly standing still.

The universe is always flowing. It never stops moving and is always changing. This principle points to the cycle of life and death. The creation and destruction along with the rising and falling. This universal Rhythm manifests within us as we experience different forms of emotions and mental states. When we align with the rhythm of life, we can use it to our advantage by polarizing ourselves to the degrees in which we desire. This means we can “choose” to be happy, or we can literally choose ourselves negative and unhappy on a daily basis.

When positive and negative things happen to us, we can choose how to respond to those things knowing that they are not going to last. Bringing awareness to these life transitions can be the difference between weeks, months, and years of recovery (mentally, physically, and emotionally). These are aspects of “knowing thyself” and trying to work toward emotional mastery.
The View from Above the Pendulum

With a heightened level of awareness around this principle of Rhythm, we can experience transcendental states of consciousness to enable ourselves to stay above the swing of the pendulum. Rhythm is always going to have an effect on us in our lives one way or another. However, staying presently aware helps us stay in control. This awareness helps guide us forward and bring us back into accountability and control of ourselves when necessary.
Self-mastery is the goal, but even with an increased awareness we can see big improvements in our emotional states. When we align with the rhythm of life, we act from a place of purpose as opposed to allowing the proverbial swing of the pendulum to take us for a ride. It certainly helps to understand that we have a choice when it comes to our observations and responses in life.
The better we can be at not allowing ourselves to get too high, or too low when “life happens” is key. The game of life is going to take us on many twists and turns, up mountains and down into valleys. We have some ability to control the accelerator as well as having the power to pump the breaks.
Buckle up — realize that there are no “one way” streets in this game. We can come out on top in the end, but in order to do so we must play through the swings of highs and lows. Always remember that whether you are experiencing positive or negative outcomes at the present moment:
This too shall pass…
